York County Awarded $500 Grant
Congratulations to today’s award of our 2021 Green Grants, which goes to York County Beautification Committee, in York County, who will receive a grant award of $500 for its Community Beautification project. We continue to announce one grant award recipient each day during the month of June.
The York County Beautification Committee’s goal is to help facilitate projects that promote a clean and green environment and work with businesses, schools and local citizens in the areas of recycling, community trash pick-up, native plant gardens at schools and at their waste management facility,
The York County Beautification Committee will use their grant funds to give Redbud Trees to businesses, organizations and schools as part of “Page’s Trees” project. In February, Page Hutchinson, the Virginia Project Learning Tree State Coordinator, passed away unexpectedly. Redbud tree (Ceris candensis) were chosen because Page loved Redbuds, it is a native throughout the state of Virginia, and is a very important to our native pollinators.
Applicants who would like to receive and care for a Redbud tree will need to fill out an online form to be considered, and agree to report all trees planted, and encouraged to post pictures, stories, and measurements of their tree on an annual basis. This project will honor Page’s legacy while helping the native ecosystems of York County.
Every year, government, non-profit, civic and service organizations in Virginia were invited to apply for grants for $500 to $1,000 describing how they plan to tackle an environmental concern in their community regarding Litter Prevention, Recycling, Cigarette Litter Prevention, or Community Beautification. Since 2011, Keep Virginia Beautiful has provided $254,500 for 320 different environmental programs and projects all across the Commonwealth, due to the generosity of their partnership with Altria, as well as additional support from Coca-Cola, WestRock and Keep America Beautiful.
