A Green Thumb for 2021

It’s out with the old, and in with the new year!  Chase away the winter blahs with plans to work on your green thumb!   From the Appalachian Plateau to the Coastal Plains (and the three regions in between), you can make your corner of the Commonwealth more beautiful by adding plants and trees.  Now’s a good time to think about the growing season, whether you have a knack for gardening, or want to find your green thumb.

Planting vegetables and flowers is good for the bees (that pollinate all the crops we eat and flowers we see!) and it’s rewarding too.  All you need is a pot of soil on the balcony or a corner of your yard, a little water, and some sunshine.

We’ll even get you started for free!  Just take our pledge to put litter and recyclables in their place, and we’ll send you a packet of Virginia native wildflowers!

Even just browsing through gardening catalogues can lower your blood pressure and inspire you to think about the possibilities for the future.  Here’s a no-paper-was-wasted catalogue from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange.  Located in Central Virginia, SESE is renowned for its heirloom vegetables and flowers. No tomato tastes as good as the ones you grow yourself!

Do you want to have your landscape and eat it too?  Edible Landscaping in Afton is just the place!  You’ll be amazed at the selection of fruits and berries in their online catalogue.   All their plants are grown without herbicides for a better environment for wildlife and for you.

Gardening is also a great way to introduce kids to the science and nutrition of growing your own food.  Keep America Beautiful has some excellent tips for gardening during COVID-19.

Or maybe you want to try your hand at adding green to your indoor space?  PlantHouse in Virginia Beach and Richmond specializes in terrariums and indoor plants.  They can help you find the perfect plant to perk up your home office.

So what are you waiting for?  Get growing!
