Earth, Wind, Fire...and LITTER!? Impacts and Implications

- "Legacy Litter" is trash that often starts as illegal dumping and is simply never, ever cleaned up, thus becoming a part of the landscape until it decomposes.

- There are 290 million tires discarded in landfills every year, and it takes approximately 50-80+ years for one to decompose.

- Most marine debris starts on land and is transported to streams and other bodies of water through rain and wind events.

- While the wind can unfortunately spread litter, it is also critical to the wildflowers that count on pollinators and breezes to help "spread" their pollen far and wide!

- Illegal dumping is a serious, serial problem that is hard to eradicate given the secretive nature of this activity in hard to reach places.

- Cigarette litter can do way more harm and damage than ever intended when lit butts are tossed carelessly in nature. Join us in recognizing Fire Prevention Month during October!

- 200,000 crashes are caused by debris on U.S. roadways since 2019.
Projects can include activities such as:
💚 Picking up litter from roadsides, neighborhoods, beaches, waterways, and parks to support cleaner communities
💚 Recycling old or unwanted items rounded up from homes and yards
💚 Planting trees, flowers and, community gardens to strengthen green infrastructure
💚 Restoring nature trails, parks, and playgrounds to encourage outdoor activity
💚 Rejuvenating business districts to boost economic development
