Free Summertime Fun
Virginia has such a wealth of things to see and do, and plenty of them are free! Take advantage of the many destinations that surround us, either in your own backyard or by exploring someplace new before the end of summer.
Whether you have a motorcycle to experience the wind in your face, or a car that gives you the chance to ride “top down,” or if you prefer the comfort of the airconditioned interior, there are so many beautiful backroads in Virginia to get out and just enjoy the ride. For inspiration, visit the website WanderLOVE to plan your road trip now!
Or if the pace of a pedal bike is more your style, Virginia is home to 838 miles of the U.S. Bicycle Route System, more than any other state, and is the only state with stretches of both official U.S. Bicycle Routes. Many of Virginia’s old railroad grades have been converted into multi-use recreation trails, with mostly flat trails that range from a few miles to several miles, and wind through some of the most beautiful scenery in Virginia. Learn more about Virginia’s Rails to Trails.
If you’re up for an adventure by foot, head to the Devil’s Bathtub in Jefferson National Forest. The challenging trail takes you over boulders and across creeks to a waterfall and swimming hole with a reputation for being as cold as it is beautiful!
Or maybe you’re in the mood for a leisurely, air-conditioned indoor browse through the Torpedo Factory Art Center just south of Washington, D.C. Open daily with free admission, visitors meet and interact with more than 160 resident artists in 82 working studios and six galleries. And from now until September 11th the Torpedo Factory Art Center is hosting a new group exhibition in Target Gallery that explores the effects of climate change. Titled “Turning Tides,” this all-media exhibition features 20 artists.
Hope you’ll go out there and get some free fun this summertime!
