This year, Keep America Beautiful is entering its 26th year coordinating the Great American Cleanup (GAC) Campaign. GAC is designed so that each city’s volunteers may select cleanup dates appropriate for the location they wish to clean. For the past seven years, Hampton has added its own event to the GAC, Walk Hampton Clean, that will take place April 20-27 as part of our Earth Week celebration. Teams of volunteers will select sites throughout the city to clean during this week long event. Walk Hampton Clean is a community celebration coinciding with Earth Day and designed to make Hampton a cleaner city.
Because we are a waterfront community, more than 75% of litter will end up in our waterways. Hampton has multiple watersheds or areas of land that drain into the water surrounding our city. Keeping our watersheds clean from trash and debris ensures that the surrounding water can be used for swimming, fishing and other activities.
By working together as a community and involving families, children and organizations in our Walk Hampton Clean event, we all can be proactive in reducing litter to create a cleaner, greener, and healthier environment.
