A Shiver of News

What has almost a thousand participants and is capped off with a refreshing dip into 36-degree water?

Our Annual Shiver in the River!

We had our first Shiver in the River in 2015. We envisioned the event as an opportunity to celebrate our capital city, the beautiful James River, our great outdoors, and the beauty of Virginia. Around 400 people made an impact by volunteering to help with a cleanup around the James River in Richmond. 150 brave souls participated in the James River Jump. We had food trucks and beverages, and pledges and donations came in that helped us to fund many of our efforts here at Keep Virginia Beautiful.

Did we mention that it was January?

Last year, it got even bigger. We again had over 400 for the cleanup, removing a ton of trash from the area, over 200 made the pledge to do the James River Jump, and well over 350 (plus a dog or two!) participated in a 5K Walk/Run. Dalton Randall was there as a volunteer working the registration tables for the 5K. When we later asked him how it went, he said, “17:31. I won.” Then he went back to work.

Shiver in the River will be back on January 28th of 2017. We’ll again be organizing a cleanup, hosting the 5K, and inviting everyone brave enough to make the James River Jump. Registration will go live on September 22nd, and we’ll be hosting a Launch Party at Hardywood Craft Brewery from 5:30 until 7:30. We have great plans in the works to make this year’s Shiver in the River bigger and better, because we want this to continue to be Richmond’s Coolest Winter Festival!
