Virginia is for Lovers NOT Litter!
The cooler temperatures of Autumn are here at last! It’s the perfect time to get outside for some fresh air! And it’s also the perfect time to clean up some of the litter out of the landscape.
In partnership with the Virginia Department of Transportation, we launched the “Virginia is for Lovers, Not Litter” month-long, statewide beautification campaign! We want to raise awareness about the litter in our Commonealth, and promote ways to preserve Virginia’s picturesque roadways, landscapes and scenic views. We hope you’ll join us in cleaning up litter and improving recycling in your community.
Spread the word: New laws are helping fight litter in the Commonwealth. In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly increased the litter tax payment for businesses and also increased the fines for those who litter. Litterers can be fined from $500 for a first offense to $2,500 and community service for subsequent offenses.
Then spread the love: take the No Love for Litter Pledge to help us reach our goal of 5,000 pledges before the end of October! Then take a look around the Lovers Not Litter website — learn more about Adopt-a-Highway or try your hand at the fun Litterbug Adventure game (for desktop or phones)!
And don’t forget to check out our Events Calendar to see what’s happening in your area of the state.
According to Keep America Beautiful’s 2020 National Litter Study, of all the litter found along roadways and highways, motorists generate 52.2% of litter and pedestrians 17.5%. Don’t be a litterbug! And educate others not to litter. It can make a difference for all of Virginia.
