Nelson County to Get Planting!
The Thomas Jefferson Soil & Water District has been awarded a $750 grant in the Beautification and Community Greening Category of Keep Virginia Beautiful’s 30 in 30 Grant Program. The program focuses greater resources and attention on organizations and individual localities throughout the Commonwealth and how they are addressing the issues of litter prevention, recycling, waste reduction, beautification and education.
The Thomas Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District (TJSWCD) will partner with the Nelson County School District to plant native trees on the Nelson County High School grounds. This project will not only beautify the school complex but will also serve as a storm water retrofit for the county and a great educational opportunity for the student body and their families. The goal of this project is to replace turf grass areas with native trees. Nelson County High School has approximately six acres of open turf area that is not designated for sport usage. This project aims to convert a portion of this turf area to native forest in order to beautify the school grounds, reduce the storm water runoff from the school grounds, and educate the students about the value of native trees and plantings.
This is our second year of 30 in 30. We’re able to offer thirty grants over the course of thirty days in amounts of up to $1,000. These grants go to folks who would like to impact and improve Virginia’s natural and scenic environment. We could not do this without the generous support of our partners: Capital One, Waste Management, and Lowe’s. Thanks, Guys!
