Our Hermitage Vikings picked up over 50 pounds of trash that otherwise might have wound up in the Chesapeake Bay.
What's scarier than Halloween? Litter on VA RoadsPeople use the I-66 exit ramp in Vienna as their personal dump. As they exit they don't seem to hesitate to throw styrofoam carryout boxes, single-use plastic bags, aluminum cans, glass bottles, empty packs of cigarettes, bags of chips, drink covers & straws, candy wrappers. This is the same place I did a litter cleanup last year and found over 80 water-logged newspapers still in their single-use plastic bags. This litter will eventually make its way into our local streams, the Potomac River, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. That's scary!
Keep VCU clean!!I got some friends together and we went out to keep the streets of Virginia Commonwealth University clean and beautiful. We got together and got some bags to clean the back alleys behind our dorms! We wanted to keep it clean and safe for the students, people who use the back streets to get to and from work, and the wildlife in Richmond! We cleaned up as much as we could and disposed of the trash afterward to ensure that the trash wouldn't end back into our beautiful streets!

Only 1/2 mile of litterHere is over 100 pounds of trash not counting the car muffler. All of this was collected on a 1/2 mile stretch of highway in Northern Frederick County. I have repeatedly asked for assistance from the state to no avail. Within this 1/2 mile there’s trash I can see but can’t get to because of my age and physical limitations. We desperately need some young bucks to help get this garbage picked up. My wife snd I do the best job we can but every year it gets harder and harder.

Tire-d of all the trash! Unfortunately covid-19 physical distancing requirements on the 50th anniversary of Earth Day meant a solitary trash cleanup project, not the neighborhood-wide event I envisioned. Proud to have removed this from the street & prevented it from entering nearby streams.

A new sign was recently installed by our 8 and 12 year old garden plot renters.

USCG Alexandriakeeping our community clean
Clean my commute: 84 waterlogged Washington Post newspapers in their plastic bagsI got tired of seeing litter during my daily evening commute and decided to enlist my friend Heidi to help me clean the 1/10 mile stretch of the I-66 exit ramp in Vienna, VA. We found 84 putrid, waterlogged Washington Post newspapers in their plastic bags, along with the usual suspects: single-use plastic bottles, fast food containers, plastic bags, cups with plastic lids & straws, liquor bottles, beer cans, cigarette butts, and other foul-smelling detritus in various stages of disintegration. We can do better for ourselves, for wildlife, for our watershed, and for our planet.
USCG AlexandriaHad a great time beautifying our local community.

We are proud of our new Nature Love Garden at the Dickenson County Chamber/Visitor Center. It has made a beautiful place for visitors to sit and enjoy the garden and the new LOVEworks sign. We had volunteers come from SWVA Community College, Ridgeview High School, Chamber board and Tourism committee members to clean up the area and plant the garden. Come spring, we should have over 100 flower bulbs popping up in our garden. Thanks to Keep Virginia Beautiful for the grant funding to do this project.

After a lunch for all participants at the Mallard Bay Community Clubhouse near Heathsville, seven skiff captains shoved off with cleanup teams to remove boatloads of trash and recyclables from the shorelines of the upper Great Wicomico River and adjacent creeks, reported NAPS president Mike Ahart. A small group of kayakers tackled the headwater creeks of Bush Mill Stream and Crabbe Mill Stream.
The teams covered over 30 miles of shoreline, bringing the “catch” back to the Mallard Bay piers to be unloaded and sorted. Bottles, cans, plastic, fishing gear and dock debris were removed from the water and shore, plus lawn furniture, a sunken sailboat, old crab baskets and oyster floats, scrap metal, tires and various other trash.
Prizes were awarded to the students on the teams with the largest total haul, largest single item, and most unusual item (see photos). In addition, each registered participant was awarded a NAPS-designed T-shirt with a trash crab logo and the message: “don’t trash my Bay!”
