Petersburg Battlefields Receive Green Grants Award

Petersburg Battlefields Foundation will receive a grant award of $500 for its Litter Prevention project.

The Petersburg Battlefields Foundation works to pursue and promote preservation, education, and tourism within the region, and serves to educate and inspire the public about the Petersburg Campaign of the Civil War. Several drainage channels from roadways, neighborhoods, business districts, and other development lead into the Battlefield. Due to higher occurrences of heavy rain, trash entering the park has increased dramatically. PBF will use their grant to construct PVC pipe structures to filter the litter that enters the park. The structure will allow for water and leaves to pass through the water pipe, but catch larger pieces of trash. Park staff will be soliciting volunteer groups/adoptees to help with cleaning and maintenance of the structures.

Congratulations to the Petersburg Battlefields Foundation for finding new ways to clean and protect the beauty of such an historic park!
