Lynnhaven River NOW Wins 30 in Thirty

We awarded Lynnhaven River NOW, an organization based in Hampton Roads, a $2,000 30 in Thirty grant for their Litter Prevention project. The group estimates that between July and November 1,200 lbs. of litter will wash up on the shores of the Lynnhaven River. They will use the money from their grant to fund a cleanup every month. In addition to cleanup supplies, they will purchase children’s and adults’ personal floatation device (PFDs) for safe participation in the on-the-water portion of the cleanups. They also plan to purchase transportable water quality kits that will be available to schools and youth groups to use, in order to further explore their interest in the health of the Lynnhaven River.

Since 2011, Keep Virginia Beautiful has provided over $145,000 to 195 projects throughout the Commonwealth. This year, we partnered with Altria, Keep America Beautiful, and Deep Run Dance Marathon to make the program possible. Government, non-profit, civic, and service organizations in Virginia were invited to apply for 30 in Thirty grants for $500 to $1,000 describing how they plan to address Litter Prevention, Recycling, Cigarette Litter Prevention, or Beautification in their communities. This year there were five additional $2,000 awards made to applicants that had extensive projects with a greater reach.
