Linwood Holton Elementary Bags 3rd Thirty in 30 Grant

Linwood Holton Elementary School in Richmond has been awarded a $500 Thirty in 30 grant in the Recycling Category.  The Thirty in 30 grant program focuses greater resources and attention on organizations and individual localities throughout the Commonwealth and how they are addressing the issues of litter prevention, recycling, waste reduction, beautification and education.   We provided the opportunity for government, non-profit and/or service organizations in Virginia to apply for one of thirty grants of $500 in three different categories:  Beautification, Litter Prevention, and Recycling.  These grants are made possible by Lowe’s Home Improvement and your generous donations.

Linwood Holton Elementary School (LHES) is expanding their Dandelion Outdoor Classroom to include composting.  At LHES, the students learn about the 4 R’s – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and ROT!  They will be adding several composting stations in their learning garden so that they can generate healthy soil for their garden from the huge amounts of food waste the school generates.  Additionally, they will be adding collection bins for the food waste throughout the school to make sure the children are aware of what steps the school is taking toward a zero-waste environment.  We’re excited to see the outcome of this composting project and are eagerly awaiting the results in pounds of food waste saved from the landfill.
