Nottoway County Public Schools WIN $1,000 Grant

Nottoway County Public Schools has been awarded a $1,000 grant in the Community Greening and Beautification Category.  The KVB grant program focuses greater resources and attention on individual localities throughout the Commonwealth and how they are addressing the issues of litter prevention, recycling, waste reduction, beautification and education.  In honor of Earth Month, Keep Virginia Beautiful (KVB) is awarding “30 Grants In 30 Days” in April, 2011.

Nottoway County Public Schools will use the KVB grant monies two fold.  First, students will be a provided a hands on learning experience in the Town of Crewe.  Crewe’s main park is experiencing erosion issues because of where it is situated, therefore the students will be given the task of studying the land, researching best erosion control options, ecological balancing with native species, planting their chosen plants and finally long term care for those plants.  In addition, students will be given the opportunity to participate in the clean-up of the Town of Blackstone.  In May, the students will give back to their community by cleaning and greening up Blackstone’s parks and Main Street.  Nottoway County Public Schools, along with the Towns of Crewe and Blackstone and a Learn and Serve Grant, will be able to beautify, green, and support 2 towns this spring through hands on learning and community involvement projects.  For more information on Nottoway County Public Schools or their projects, please contact Michelle Wallace at 424-645-9596 or [email protected].

KVB provided the opportunity for government, non-profit and/or service organizations in Virginia to apply for one of (30) $1,000 grants in three different categories: 10 grants for plastic bag reduction and recycling, 10 grants for cigarette litter prevention, and 10 grants for community greening and beautification.  These grants are made possible by KVB’s partners, Walmart and Waste Management.
