Promoting “Green” Building in Virginia

Those of you in the commercial and residential development world are probably familiar with the James River Green Building Council, (JRGBC).  For those of you who are not submerged in the building industry, the JRGBC is a pretty great resource for regional and statewide green building efforts.

The James River Green Building Council strives to create a positive impact on the “built environment” within Central Virginia.  Their goal is to empower the building industry with market-based solutions that encourage green building practices, technologies, policies, and standards.

The JRGBC Mission is as follows:

As buildings fundamentally impact peoples’ lives and the health of the planet, our mission is to create a positive impact on the region’s built environment. Through the consensus process, and by drawing on the experience of stakeholders in the building industry, we will:

  1. Promote cost effective design, construction and operation of buildings that are healthy places to live and work, environmentally responsible, and profitable.
  2. Serve the James River Green Building Council members and our communities through development of industry standards, design practices and technologies, green building and design policy advocacy, information exchange, and education.
  3. Encourage a widespread acceptance of LEED certified buildings as the regional standard.

These efforts will most certainly effect the overall “green” footprint of the state of Virginia.
