AskHRGreen Wins New 30 in Thirty Award

We awarded AskHRGreen, based in Hampton Roads, a $2,000 grant for their Cigarette Litter Prevention project.  AskHRGreen is part of the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission which is a collaboration of local governments that encourages environmental stewardship.  Cigarette waste is recognized as the most frequently littered item.  In order to combat this, AskHRGreen will use the money awarded to purchase cigarette ash receptacles for seven partnering localities in Hampton Roads.  A project leader for each area will conduct a pre-scan of the area to measure cigarette litter that is on the ground in the proposed sight, install cigarette litter receptacles, conduct public outreach and education in the area and distribute portable ashtrays, and upon completion, will conduct a post-scan of the area to measure results.

Government, non-profit, civic, and service organizations in Virginia were invited to apply for 30 in Thirty grants for $500 to $1,000 describing how they plan to address Litter Prevention, Recycling, Cigarette Litter Prevention, or Beautification in their communities.  This year there were five additional $2,000 awards made to applicants that had extensive projects with a greater reach. Since 2011, we have provided over $145,000 to 195 projects throughout the Commonwealth.  This year, we partnered with Altria, Keep America Beautiful, and Deep Run Dance Marathon to make the program possible.
