Lonesome Pine Soil & Water Conservation WINS!

The Lonesome Pine Soil and Water Conservation District has been awarded a $1,000 grant in the Plastic Bag Recycling Category.  The KVB grant program focuses greater resources and attention on individual localities throughout the Commonwealth and how they are addressing the issues of litter prevention, recycling, waste reduction, beautification and education.  In honor of Earth Month, Keep Virginia Beautiful (KVB) is awarding “30 Grants In 30 Days” in April, 2011.

Lonesome Pine Water and Soil Conservation District with the help of state, federal, and local agencies and its community of citizen volunteers would like to restore their Guest River back to the environmental jewel it once was.  They plan  to use the grant money to fund a new Plastic Bag Awareness Campaign, in which they will outreach to the surrounding businesses, supermarkets, schools, and town halls to install recycling stations.  Additionally, Lonesome Pine District will give out reusable bags and educate their community about the value of reducing, reusing, and recycling.  Plastic bags are a huge litter problem in all of Wise County and this Plastic Bag Awareness Campaign set-up by the Lonesome Pine Soil and Water Conservation District will be a key factor in the overall Guest River Restoration Project.  For more information about the Lonesome Pine Soil and Water Conservation District or their project, please contact Joshua Larsen at 276-926-6621 or [email protected].

KVB provided the opportunity for government, non-profit and/or service organizations in Virginia to apply for one of (30) $1,000 grants in three different categories: 10 grants for plastic bag reduction and recycling, 10 grants for cigarette litter prevention, and 10 grants for community greening and beautification.  These grants are made possible by KVB’s partners, Walmart and Waste Management.
